Week 3: Wikis

As a recent graduate of an MLIS program, I made several wikis as part of my coursework.  I also created a wiki for new incoming students to the Rutgers MLIS program.  The wiki incorporates delicious bookmarks to help new students navigate their way through important tasks, like getting their ids, parking, and finding out where food can be found on campus!  Sadly, even though my RUasis&t (Rutgers University chapter, American Society for Information Science & Technology) wiki is wide open for editing, I am primarily the person who does the editing.  As you can see, I don't really have time for this any more.  The editing I do know is mainly deleting spam additions to the sidebar (a danger of a wiki that doesn't require user approval by an admin).  I thought a wiki would be great because students could add/change information as they went along.  That hasn't really happened.

Now that you know about my outdated wiki, I'll show it to you anyway...Please note one of the coolest features of pbwiki (or pbworks) is that I embedded a button on the website that goes right to the wiki.  Super easy for people to get to, and who can resist pushing a shiny website button?  Also the "helpful links" link on the sidebar shows how I used delicious in conjunction with this wiki.  (That's right, I'm sneaking a little week 2 in here).  I'm a little depressed to discover that a few of my favorite links (Hot Library Smut among them) appear to be broken.

Week 3: I Missed You! (oops)

Don't worry, there will be some catch-up posts, because I have a lot to say.  Week 3 was busy for me because I competed in (and finished) my very first triathlon!!  I'm a tribrarian!  I did the NJ State Sprint Distance triathlon, which is a 500 meter swim, 11.5 mile bike, and 5k run.  I finished in 1:38:54 and my goal was 1:45 so I'm pretty pumped up.  I'm off to work on Week 4.  Stay tuned...

Week 2: Google Reader

Dear Google Reader,

I think I love you.  Sometime recently, you decided to automatically add blogs that I follow in Blogger as subscriptions to my existing Google Reader account.  You wrote, "The blogs you follow in Blogger have been added as subscriptions in Google Reader."  Yay!  Clicking the little "follow" button is sooo easy.  Finding feeds and pasting urls is kind of a pain.  Also, I love having you right on my home page.  You're a genius!

Week 1: Glogster!

Hello!  Sorry to be late with my posting, but like some others, I work at a public library and am in the throes of Summer Reading Programming!!  This week is particularly busy.

My name is Gabrielle Casieri (I go by Gabrielle), and I am a part-time youth services librarian in the Mercer County Library System.  I work with children aged toddler through teen at my local branch, and I do a lot of school outreach, primarily to elementary school students.  I am looking forward to playing with tech tools that will appeal to my patrons!

I thought I would kill two birds with one stone (so to speak) and introduce myself with the tech tool my daughter loves most of all:  Glogster.  Glogging is akin to blogging, but with more multimedia glitz.  You essentially create a one-page poster that can contain photos, audio, video, and all kinds of stickers and graphics.  Its push-button publishing is easy to use, and kids can really go crazy with it.  My daughter's social studies teacher introduced the 5th grade class to Glogs last year, and they created them in lieu of more traditional posters to fulfill their project requirements.  I never had to ask her to finish -- she LOVED spending time on the computer.

I would love to get kids Glogging about books they love.  I'm not sure whether our county system would support individual Glogs being attached to the library, but maybe someday...
